He married Elizabeth Farwell January 12, 1730 in Groton, MA. Elizabeth was born November 2, 1713 in Groton, MA. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Farwell and Elizabeth "Esther" Solendine. Elizabeth died November 27, 1794 in Ashburnham, MA, at age 81. When Elizabeth was age 33 and Jonathan Gates was age 43 they became the parents of Josiah Gates September 26, 1747 in Harvard, MA.

When Jonathan was age 43 and Elizabeth Farwell was age 33 they became the parents of Josiah Gates September 26, 1747 in Harvard, MA.
